TRT SPOTLIGHT ON… SHADOW ASSASSIN

One of the newest additions to the Thoroughbred Retraining Program is the well-loved Shadow Assassin.  This brown gelding has been handpicked by Thoroughbred Retraining Manager Scott Brodie to be the horse to follow by the ‘Jewel in the Night’ donators.

Shadow Assassin began his racing career showing great promise. Born in 2006 to Dane Shadow and Mascara Magic, Shadow Assassin was named in 2008 and sent to be trained under racing’s First Lady, Gai Waterhouse.

Shadow Assassin won his very first start on Boxing Day in December 2008 in the Magic Millions prelude at Royal Randwick Racecourse, winning $150,000 for his owners. He then Ran fourth in the Magic Millions in Queensland. Over a 4 year period, Shadow Assassin went on the place in various races in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. He had a total of 11 starts, with 2 trainers, and won nearly ¼ of a million in prizemoney, but his first win in 2008 was his only win.

When Shadow Assassin was offered to Scott Brodie in October, Scott saw the potential in the gelding to excel in a career off the track, and so the next chapter in Shadow Assassin’s life begins.

Shadow Assassin was picked up in October from Emeran Park by our generous supports at Sydney Horse Transport and brought to the St Heliers Correctional Facility in Muswellbrook. Shadow Assassin then spent some time in the quarantine yards and making friends with other new arrivals prior to commencing his retraining.

At present, Shadow Assassin is in phase one of his retraining which involves plenty of schooling with ground work which is all carried out by inmates, under the watchful eye of skilled supervisors. When ready, he will be brought into the training headquarters at Canterbury for phase 2 of his retraining program, where Thoroughbred Retraining Manager Scott Brodie will begin riding and assessing Shadow Assassin’s future career potential.
